Being Presbyterian
Gilroy Presbyterian Church is part of the PCUSA, the largest Presbyterian group in the United States today. Specifically, we are a part of the San Jose Presbytery. As part of this larger group, we trace our history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
What is distinctive about the Presbyterian Church?
Presbyterians are distinctive in two major ways: they adhere to a pattern of religious thought known as Reformed theology and a form of government that stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members.
What does "Being Presbyterian" mean at Gilroy Presbyterian Church?
Even though we are a part of a larger body, GPC has its own unique flavor that is probably more relevant to most folks coming through our doors.
- Grace – Everyone makes mistakes, and we're no exception. Critical to spiritual growth and wholeness though, is the ability to forgive, love and accept those who may have hurt you or who have a differing opinion. At GPC we value grace, understanding and acceptance of each other.
- Story – Nothing is worse than feeling like you're not a part of the group. We're working hard to make sure anyone coming to GPC knows that they're valuable and that they have something to contribute. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and brings value to the community.
- No Requirements – Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, you're welcome here. So, membership is available, but certainly not mandatory. You're welcome to be a part of the community without formally becoming a member if that is your desire.
Ultimately, you'll have to come and experience Gilroy Presbyterian Church in order to form your own opinion about what "Being Presybterian" means here at GPC. We hope you do.
