Personal Growth Plan

If I were to ask you how you intentionally became more like Christ last year, how would you answer? Maybe if I put it this way: “How did you intentionally grow in Christ last year?” Could you answer that?

As I survey my own life and the life of most people, our growth has happened almost at random with very little intention to become more like Christ in His actions and Character.

Now, what if I said your growth in Christ is what it means to be a Christ follower? That is what the disciples did. That is what the word “disciple” means. Will you join me and others in making a Personal Growth Plan to become more like Christ in his character and actions in this coming year.

As you do this, here are three helpful hints:

  1. Spend significant time praying about how Jesus is calling you to be more like Him this coming year. Usually, this growth comes through disciplines like: Committing to pointing disconnected people toward God; Making financial stewardship goals; Committing to be a part of a Small Group Experience.

  2. Don’t make too many goals and make them SMART!
    (S) means the goal is a stretch for you,
    (M) means that it is measurable. This is perhaps the toughest part of goal setting. “Read the Bible more” is not measurable but “Read a chapter every day” is measurable.
    (A) means that the goal will add to your life and to the ultimate goal of becoming more Christ Like.
    (R) means the goal is realistic. Don’t set a goal you can't achieve. That is just discouraging.
    (T) means that the goal is time bound. Figure out how long you will pursue the goal. Give it a deadline so that there will be horizon for success or evaluation.

  3. Make your goals public knowledge. Share your goals with people around you. If you are in a small group, share them with the group, your friends and even I would love to know what you set as goals.

I would love to help you in this process. This form is for that purpose. Take a few moments to fill it out and it will be emailed to my inbox. It won’t be too public but I will be more than happy to be praying for you and even give you feedback if you like. — Pastor Jeff
